I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised with the (vegan) discoveries we made in Lisbon. Not only is it a beautiful city, but vegan is also slowly becoming the standard in this vibrant capital. On several times, I simply ran into menus with vegan options by turning an unexpected corner.
Our top 5, from excellent to outstanding:
Often named as Lisbon vegan best restaurant, this place was my first stop when I arrived in the city. We absolutely loved the selection of toast we had (especially the ‘fetish’, with thinly sliced beetroot) and the seasonal risotto. Each time the vegetables were at the centrepiece of the dish and made quite the impact, even on my non-vegan but very curious friends. The staff, space and cheese fondue didn’t really meet our needs. Rua D Luis I 19. Open Mon-Sat 12:00-00:00. Closed Sun
The Green Affair Chiado
I was immediately drawn in by the beautiful decor (lush palm tree wallpaper, golden and green details) and the inviting menu. It feels very chic and still has quite casual food options: cauliflower "wings", gyozas, and the apparently very convincing Moving Mountains burger. I had the Fried tofu Burger which had generous vegan mayo and crispy fries. Wish I would’ve had more room to try Chocolate Cake that my neighbours happily devoured. R. Serpa Pinto 15A. Mon-Sun 12:00-23:00
I picked up the last batch of Pasteis de Nata here (a traditionally egg and milk-loaded Portuguese dessert) for Christmas Eve and let me tell you: they were amazing! R. Horta Seca 1. Mon-Sun 7:30-20:00
Nothing bad can be said about our experience at AO26: The way-too-realistic pastel de bacalhau, the mind-blowing cheese platter, the good wine and a solo traveller who shared his table with us. This place feels very homey and serves several other traditional Portuguese dishes in their vegan version. 10/10!
A more than honorary mention goes to Ferez, a cute little bar on Rua Sao Paulo: here, we made good friends, we had finger-licking food and the cocktails are all made with aquafaba! Yes, you heard that right. We wandered in here by accident and had an amazing time. Make sure to try the beetroot pisco sour and order the hummus with artichokes. They were both sensational! Rua de S. Paulo 200. Mon-Fri 6:00 PM - 1:00 AM, Sat-Sun 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM - 1:00 AM
I also spent 7 days at the beautiful 4 Elements Retreat doing yoga, meditation and walking on the beach. The place is fully vegetarian and Ali catered to my vegan needs better than I could've ever expected. It was a really inspiring and relaxing get-away that I highly recommend.
